First Week of School Fun!

Hello Families!!

We all had an AMAZING first week together! Here's some fun back to school pictures, I used our classroom communication device to have the students each choose what community job they'd like to have when they grow up. Each child answered the question independently!

On Tuesday we read an adaptive book that focused on "my first day of school". The story focused on the different activities that you do during the school day. The students also practiced answering questions using picture symbols and identifying pictures that are the "same". This is something we'll build off of once the students understand the expectation.

Each morning we do a classroom morning meeting together. We focus on communication and working in our adapted binders to answer questions. I present a slideshow presentation on our whiteboard that contains Boardmaker picture symbols and fun educational videos incorporated. Here's some great shots of the students in action!

This week we have started a group activity to start of the year- the "Letter of the Day/Week". This week we focused on the letter A. On Monday, we stamped the letter A across a page on specific lines focusing on orientation and fine motor (the grasping of the small letter stamp), as well as following simple one step directions. Then we cut out pictures that begin with the letter A and pasted them onto a page. This task focuses on letter sounds (reinforced by the support person working with them), cutting, gluing and attending to task. On Wednesday, we practiced tracing and rainbow writing the letter A and bingo stamped to create an A. On Thursday and Friday we read adapted books focusing on words that start with the letter A. We also practice letter A identification or letter sounds for some friends. This was a great was to help students generalize and carry over their skills to a different activity. All the students did a great job taking turns and most importantly waiting their turn. To wrap up our lesson on Friday we made a letter A wheel that contained the different pictures we learned about in our adapted books.

All of the students have done a great job learning their new routines and expectations. I'm so excited for a great year together!

Have a great long weekend,

Miss Feeley
