Hello Families!!
This week we read the story:
Throughout the book I put picture symbols of core words or vocabulary that we're working on throughout the week: thankful, family, sun, friends, Thanksgiving, thank you. This allows for the students to listen to the story but also have visual supports throughout to support comprehension and understanding. As we read the story we completed various activities: vocabulary introduction, sorting, writing book, and a fun craft.
We turkeys using coffee filters. The students first used markers to draw a design or lines and then sprayed it with a water bottle to make the colors bleed into a fun new design. It was a great fine motor activity that incorporated color identification and counting too!
To support our unit and book this week, we read the Scholastic News article:
In the article we had to clap for the things we were thankful for! Everyone took turns going up to the board to help identify pictures, numbers and colors. After each section there were some questions that we answered using picture symbols. Students took turns asking one another and teachers about their favorite animal! It was a great way to see the students interact and engage with one another. At the end of the article we played a fun game and each student chose foods to "make" a plate for Thanksgiving!
Throughout the week we play group games to practice taking turns, communication and participation. Tuesday we played the game "Lucky Ducks"- this game practiced their counting, fine motor, matching, shape and color identification. As the school year has progressed we've seen more independence in their participation in each of the games.
This week we started using a fun song that sings about how to write and form numbers. We project the video onto our white board and it helps us practice not only writing our numbers but it also reinforces number identification as well. They work very hard and really enjoy singing along or dancing in their seats as we complete this activity.
Next week to continue our Thanksgiving unit, we'll be reading the story:
We will be doing different activities like sequencing, vocabulary identification and working on using a communication board for some friends to use in answering questions about the story. We'll also be doing a fun craft!
Have a great weekend,
Miss Feeley
